Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is a kart racing game. It has the same playability as other games of its genre, such as Mario Kart and Konami Krazy Racers. In the game, players will race through different themed race tracks from various Sega franchises. As you race around the circuit track, you will have the opportunity to collect power-ups that can significantly increase your speed. Boosters can also be used to block opponents. Players can earn more power-ups through drifting or performing tricks in the air. There are four types of vehicles used on racing circuits, including racing cars, off-road vehicles, bicycles, and hovercraft. Due to the terrain on the race circuits, the vehicles will be assisted or hindered by the surfaces on which they circulate. For example, racing vehicles can perform well on hard surfaces but are hampered by soft terrain such as mud and snow. As you progress through the game, you will be able to earn Sega Miles that can be used to unlock additional features in the game, including characters and clues. Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing has twenty-four race tracks that are based on locations from different games like Sonic Heroes, Super Monkey ball, and Amigo’s Samba.

The background music played throughout the game is derived from old and new tracks from the Sonic video game franchises. However, the game also has original songs by various artists, including Richard Jacques. At first, the course only has one track. As Sega Miles earns, more tracks will be unlocked. The MIDI tracks on the Nintendo DS platform are composed by Allister Brimble and Anthony Putson of Orchestral Media Development. The main theme song for Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is So Much More … which was originally sung by Bethley Jones.

At the beginning of the game, players will be able to choose from 8 different players, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Amy Rose, AiAi, Amigo, Bill Hatcher, Miles, Dr. Robotnik, and Shadow the Hedgehog. Other characters can be unlocked through Sega Miles.
